Season 8 may be the last above average season of The Simpsons. It would not be long after this season when I stopped enjoying The Simpsons as great. Their legend lines became increasingly over-the-top and the shows were often to intent on focusing on the celebrity of the week. This season starts to go in that direction with some way-out episodes, but is not quite there yet. Season 7 is my accepted but Season 8 has many gems including “The Homer They Plunge,” “Burns, Baby Burns,” “Lisa’s Date with Density,” “Hurricane Neddy,” “Homer Vs. The Eighteenth Amendment,” and “In Marge We Trust.”

“Treehouse of Fright VII”: (a) The Thing and I: Bart finds out he has an wicked Siamese brother Hugo; (b) The Genesis Tub: Lisa conducts experiments with her fallen baby tooth and creates a mini society. When she is zapped into dinky size, she warns the small society against the “Unlit One” (Bart) ; (c) Kang and Kodos approach to earth posed as Bob Dole and Bill Clinton. Of course, with the two-party system, one of them has to acquire.
“You Only Go Twice”: Homer begins working for Hank Scorpio who is a superb and fun boss despite his plans for global terrorism and extortion.
“The Homer They Plunge”: Homer becomes a boxer with Moe as his manager. All goes well until he has to fight Drederick Tatum. Large Mike Tyson and Don King characters.
“Burn, Baby Burns”: Mr. Burns finds out he has a long-lost son (voiced by Rodney Dangerfield) who becomes bosom buds with Homer. Adore the line: “This residence is emptier than a Scottish pay toilet.”

“Bart After Gloomy”: After Bart damages property at an spooky faded house, Homer forces Bart to work at the house which turns out to be a burlesque house.
“A Milhouse Divided”: Milhouse’s parents win divorced and his dad decides to becomes a [bad] singer.
“Lisa’s Date with Density”: Lisa develops a crush on bully Nelson Muntz and thinks she can change him. I savor the scene where Nelson throws a rock at a window and tries to narrate Lisa the cops are chasing him and he needs a hideout only to have Homer start the window to exclaim him Lisa’s room is the next window over. I also cherish the auto-dialer sub-story.
“Hurricane Neddy”: One of my all-time favorites. Ned Flanders’s house is the only one destroyed in a hurricane and he begins to demand his faith. In a flashback, we earn out how he started saying doodily, diddily, as a why to believe in rage.
“The Mysterious Voyage of Homer”: This is a unfamiliar one. Homer eats a abominable pepper at a chili cook-off and hallucinates about a coyote who urges Homer to bag his soul mate.
“The Springfield Files:” X-Files take-off.
“The Bent World of Marge Simpson”: After being booted out of the Investorettes club for being too conservative, Marge buys a pretzel franchise but keeps hitting stumbling blocks to success. Homer decides to recruit the services of Elephantine Tony.
“Mountain of Madness”: This one is also a petite queer. During a survival retreat for the nuclear power plant, Mr. Burns and Homer are snowed-into a cabin and eventually inaugurate hallucinating.
“Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala(”doh!”) cious”: The Simpsons need a nanny and hire Mary Pop..,uh,…Shary Bobbins.
“The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Indicate”: Homer becomes the affirm of a unusual cartoon character who doesn’t go over very well.
“Homer’s Phobia”: Homer meets a droll guy who runs a collectible shop “Cockamamies” (gotta adore that name) named John and is frightened when he discovers John, uh, prefers the company of men. Worst of all, Homer thinks John is influencing Bart.
“Brother From Another Series”: (Colossal title) . Sideshow Bob is released from prison and joins forces with his brother Cecil (voiced by David Hyde Pierce, of course, Sideshow Bob is voiced by Kelsey Grammer–get the title? ) . Could Bob actually be the satisfactory guy in this episode???
“My Sister, My Sitter”: Lisa becomes Bart’s baby sitter and Lisa is terrified she’s killed her brother after knocking him down the stairs. This one is a limited over-the-top.
“Homer Vs. The Eighteenth Amendment”: One of my all-time favorites! Prohibition starts up again in Springfield and Homer assists Moe in creating a speakeasy. Can Homer out-fox Rex Banner?
“Grade School Confidential”: Distinguished Skinner and Mrs. Krabappel originate a romance and construct controversy at Springfield Elementary. The Skinner is a virgin thing was a minute worthy.
“The Canine Mutiny”: Bart gets beget of a deceptive credit card and buys all kinds of stuff including a pedigree collie, Laddie. When repo-men near to glean the stuff, Bart gives them Santa’s Diminutive Helper instead of Laddie and soon regrets the decision.
“The Venerable Man and the Lisa”: Mr. Burns, who’s recently lost his fortune, joins forces with Lisa to beget a recycling plant. Of course, Mr. Burns could never turn this plant into an deplorable operation…yeah, lawful! I treasure Moe’s line about the “Shrimp Lisa” logo: “Ah, isn’t that cute. It makes Cramped Debbie behold like a pile of puke.”
“In Marge We Trust”: Marge becomes the “Listen Lady” and burned-out Mr. Lovejoy is petrified she has become more favorite than him with his flock.
“Homer’s Enemy”: Frank Grimes is the recent employee at the nuclear power plant and, unlike everyone else, he doesn’t get Homer’s incompetence. A very unlit episode.
“The Simpsons Spin-off Showcase”: A 1970s-style variety point to take-off of The Brady Bunch. Impartial as Jan refused to participate, Lisa is replaced by an actress who looks fair like her…yeah, honest!
“The Secret War of Lisa Simpson”: Bart is forced to enlist in military school and, impressed by the discipline which seems outlandish since Lisa is such a free thinker that one would not assume she’d be attracted to the unquestioning soldier’s life, she decides to join, too. And all the boys glean her…uh, no.
I looked forward to buying the next released season of The Simpsons on DVD every year, however, getting season eight this year is going to be a bittersweet occasion. Of course, I add yet another solid gold season of The Simpsons to my collection, but this in turn will result in the raze of my Simpsons collection. Yes, like many other reviewers of this DVD spot on Amazon, I fragment the same sentiment that this is the last season worth buying. From season 9 and onward, the point to grew progressively worse in the long rush, and lost what made it worth watching in the first area.
Basically, this is the last season of The Simpsons that retained its witty sense of humor, and didn’t resort to odd storylines and throwing in celebrity guest stars week after week. Episodes like “You Only Go Twice” (I savor the 007 scene), “A Milhouse Divided”, “The Crooked World Of Marge Simpson”, Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala(ANNOYED Roar) cious”, “The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Point To”, “Homer’s Phobia”, and the classic “Homer’s Enemy” exudes the shows last ounces of genius from script to camouflage. The storylines of these episodes are appetizing, and attractive from initiate to carry out. The witty humor of the past seasons is well retained in season eight with many side splitting moments of hillarity to present it. In addition, season eight showcases further development of common characters, as well as the introduction of unforgettable current favorites like Frank Grimes and Poochie.
Truly, Season 8 is indeed the waste of an era of what was the most brilliantly inventive series on television. Fortunately, it will live infinitely on DVD to be respected and enjoyed by core fans and casual viewers alike.

I gotta hand it to the folks who beget these shows. First, it’s stop-motion animation, which is a harm to do (bear me, I’ve done it) . Two, you got to boom a decent epic in a short amount of time without it coming off as goofy.

Well, guess what? This Bob the Builder installment nailed it and you win a few colossal stories out of the deal as well.
However, I do have to admit Sumsy was a slight queer, her shouting random numbers and all, but other than that, this volume is an absolute blast. I loved it. My two-year-old loved it. My wife loved it.

Recommended.
We bought this merely as a procedure for my husband and I to find a fracture from the other single Bob the Builder DVD our 1 1/2 year loves to ogle. As powerful as I despise to admit it, I actually can tolerate the older one (Scoop’s Popular Adventures) remarkable better. This distinguished be newer vintage Bob – the voices on this DVD are extremely “English” (not that that’s awful…) . That given, there are various episodes with original characters and both my 4 1/2 and 1 1/2 year olds savor this video.

This is the kind of respect an anime series should regain. Fair translate the record as-is and leave the ‘interpretation’ and reaction to the viewer. Blood and all. [They are ninja you know...] Perceive it subtitled for the fleshy carry out!

Don’t earn me detestable — I fully understand the financial and practical value of releasing a dub version in order to advance the widest possible market. I understand that there are many people who unbiased don’t care to read the dialog instead of listen to it. And others who honest don’t want their pictures cluttered up with words.
But there are serene those (like me) who want their anime as finish to the modern obtain as possible; uncut and in the unusual language, and with the new seiyuu (sigh actor’s) performances intact. So if that’s what you’re looking for, oh Reader Of This Review, Bustle out and occupy this position as soon as you can. The translation is beneficial (well… except for “beget it”, *sigh* Okay, okay… I can ignore that), the presentation graceful and you salvage a nice bonus in the story-board booklet. But most importantly you gain the whole the record of Naruto as originally intended… not fair the parts deemed ’safe enough’ for general American audiences.

Thank you, Viz, for giving us Naruto fans that distinguished respect – and a choice. I, for one, eagerly await the release of the next state in this uncut series — money in hand.
…I only wish the ONE Portion anime could accumulate this same respectful treatment as well. *cries*
2008 EDIT: Yes, this has both a dubbed English track and the Japanese language track with English subtitles. And yes, Funimation does have One Fraction and promises us an un-cut release later this month. Woo hoo! Let the Pirate vs. Ninja wars really heat up!
>> 13 episodes (for those wondering)
This would be a broad deal and worth getting if Naruto ended at episode 50. Unfortunatly the series is REALLY long (and ongoing) as well as loaded with slowely paced episodes which makes the box situation not worth its stamp.
As the review before says, it ends proper at the zabuza fight which is where Naruto actually gets bewitching.
Just mediate about it, the best parts in Naruto are around the first 110 episodes, at 40 bucks for 13 episodes thats around 340 dollars! not to mention the series is well over 200 episodes now.
But, the series is fabulous. If you’re a tall fan (like me) maybe you wont mind dishing out that distinguished money for naruto… However, I managed to salvage a superior discount on them which is why im even considering it. It was inevitable that the producers would rob advantage of the ongoing Naruto fad.
I would probably wait off until they release more episodes on DVD and accomplish a savings sage to afford them when the all advance out. That arrangement you wont be left on any cliff hangers =)

I initially watched this series because I am a expansive fan of Slayers and knew this was done by the same people. I watched the first episode and was immediately drawn in, because I like things that blend sci-fi and fantasy. Lost Universe is similar to Slayers in that it combines silly and serious elements. There are some episodes that are objective purely comic (in one episode, they must end a ship by being hijacked by fanatical chicken-worshipers), while especially later in the series more serious themes of friendship, loyalty, and not giving up even in the darkest circumstances advance into play. The characters are also more well developed and three dimensional than those in Slayers. In general, the Slayers legacy can be seen in Lost Universe, but it is in a lot of ways a powerful more feeble series.

The only problems I had with it were I understanding the ending was a bit rushed. I assume that if they had gotten rid of fair a couple of the filler episodes in the beginning and started the “sincere” location one or two episodes sooner, the series would have felt more coherent. As it is, many crucial dwelling details were revealed all of a sudden at the very waste, and happen all at once such as to lessen the emotional impact. It seems almost like we have two series here — the beginning, which is consuming and comedic, and the more serious second half, which raises a lot of world-building and philosophical points, but doesn’t have time to stare them thoroughly.
The series is very similar to Star Wars, too, to the point of almost being a blatant ripoff. I don’t simply mean about the light and the unlit side fighting each other with magical ravishing swords, either. But you’ll leer when you salvage to the final two or three episodes what I’m talking about. The similarities, however, are more within the residence details than they are in the world-building, which I conception was done quite well, fine swords and all.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Lost Universe – Thinpak Collection! Click Here
If that doesn’t bother you, though, then I assume this series is definitely worth seeing. The awesome characters and compelling universe more than compose up for any of the series’ shortcomings in my view.
I have to say this is probably another gem I unknowingly found while looking for another series for myself and have not been disappointed with my choice. The series is similar to the humor of the anime series Slayers and Ranma 1/2. The series itself focuses mostly on the three main characters Millie Nocturne(An Under/Over achiever trying her best to be the best at what she wants to do with dubious results), Kane Blueriver(A captain of the starship SwordBreaker and while somewhat of a bumbler is actually a skilled fighter), and finally Canal(The SwordBreaker’s holographic A.I. image with a smarmy attitude) . The series has you witness the trio go on their zanny and comical quests together and while there is fighting and action it’s not done to be to dramatic or serious like Gundam Seed or Inuyasha. The last final episodes do seem a bit more dramatic than the rest of the series but I deem it fits in nicely though for the storyline. The verbalize actors for the dubbed audio were exquisite top-notch and while there were some that could have done better all in all they weren’t dreadful. The Japanese assure actors did a terrific job as well no complaints there and the video for the series is obvious with no blurriness or distortions to disaster about. So if you like the light-hearted sci-fi anime with a colossal touch of comedy this hidden gem might be for you and for those unruffled unsure try watching a few episodes you might objective be surprised at how great you delight in it….

This is one of my all time approved movies, and I was elated as punch to leer it advance out on DVD. For those of you not familiar with it, the fable is of the figure-skating diva that can’t procure a partner, who suddenly meets her match in Doug Dorsey, a washed up hockey-player brimming with testosterone. They meet, they bicker, they plunge in appreciate. Badda-boom, badda-bing. This is more of a ‘chick’ movie than a guy movie, but it’s enthralling for the entire family, IMO.
Two things maintain me from giving this DVD the 5 stars it deserves : One is cinematic, and one is something else.
1. The ending abruptly cuts off, leaving you to ‘guess’ how it ends. Some folks purchase an ending like this–I do not. I want it spelled out for me!

2. There are hardly any ’special features’ on this DVD. The only one is the movie trailer. If you’re looking to fetch the DVD for all the special add-ins, skip this one.
But it’s composed one of my favorites! DB Sweeney really steals the movie away.
A very sullen Kate Mosley has dreams of being a skating champion who has insecure off many potential partners. Douglas Dorsey has dreams of being a professional hockey player. When an depressed accident impairs his vision, and he is no longer able to compete at the professional level, his dream is altered forever. Doug and Kate are paired together toward a novel dream.

Ordered this on the premise of Mila Kunis possibly carrying a film, and they were advertising this as the “unrated” version. But in the raze, you are left with feeling disappointment and watching awful storytelling.

Mila plays a scared young lady who is sent to an island work camp by her parents. The isolated layout of this camp in Fiji could construct for a magnificent filming space, but it really only gets traditional once or twice (coral, white sand beaches, etc.) . Peter Stormare (I always remember him the most as Satan in Constantine) fills the role as the camp creator and leader of this paramilitary counseling group. The idiot boyfriend who finds a method to earn himself committed to the same camp (yeah honest) is played by Gregory Smith (he has a remarkable better role in Closing the Ring) .
As more unlikely events occur and an intermittent writing mess unfolds in virtually every scene, the movie strives to falter. Mila tried very hard here, and I have to give her props for taking a somewhat different role. There are plenty of famous themes attempted here, including the topics of physical abuses and illegal activities that occur at these camps, but the short paragraph statement in the credits is all we are given as an extra. No supplements. The sound was average as was the recount quality. Regarding the unrated quip, everything that could give it an R happens off camera or is edited out (Mila’s shower scenes and abuses towards one female character) . Almost feels like a made for TV movie, but even then so remarkable is not explained or elaborated on, that it misses the imprint on being an informative film. It becomes more of a brief passion section film about these camps.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Boot Camp! Click Here
This tiny gem took me by surprise! Initially, I fair wanted to peep a movie with Mila Kunis in it to gape why she was basically the only one (except for Ashton Kutcher on a smaller scale) who has made the successful transition from That 70’s Note to the movies…my guess is that TV to the gigantic scrren a very hard thing to do…considering indispensable past attempts and failures. Anyway, the first thing I was greeted with in Boot Camp was not only one transitional actress, but a transitional actor as well…Gregory Smith of Everwood (an exceptional and believable actor in his have fair) …and a well set aside together movie as well. I have been aware of these “Tough Worship” boot camps for many years now, and I am positive that what goes on in Boot Camp is what goes on in some of them to a degree but not ALL of them. I’m certain that many of these camps, although rigid in their ways, are also successful in what they are trying to win across to afraid teens.
Anyway, befriend to the movie itself. This is a chilling, edge-of-your seat sage that impartial never lets up, and it was well-acted on ALL accounts. I had the belief on two separate occasions during the movie that I didn’t want it to waste. I loved some of the characters, and I hated others. The movies sucks you in and doesn’t let up. Well-written, well-directed, well-produced, and filmed with a handsome backdrop…Boot Camp delivers from commence to enact. KUDOS to all fervent!

Because I’d seen so many of these episodes so many times, I started to skip through them and impartial eye the ones I really enjoyed. On this DVD, I was pleasantly surprised to gaze what I bear is the ONLY episode of the Cosby Present that I’d never seen, and how fitting of it to be about a book club. “Bookworm” was my well-liked episode on the entire DVD, and I rewatched it so I could laugh at Cosby’s secret at the book club meeting, especially when he rolled his eyes after giving a page number. Classic! However, I was stupid tired and bored to tears with the “Shakespeare” episode. I don’t know why the writers notion enacting scenes from “Shakespeare” would manufacture a gracious episode. I couldn’t stand reading the stuff in high school and college (and I did understand it), so I definitely didn’t want to examine it on a present that I did indulge in. I conception “The Locker Room” was an captivating episode because it didn’t ruin the arrangement I expected it to, but it was extremely right to reality. This was a dazzling safe season. I liked the ones when Rudy was older mighty better, and this season makes me wish “A Different World: Season 2″ would resurface, so I can occupy it. This was around the time when I would be rushing for the “Cosby Point To” to be over with, so “A Different World” could approach on. Man, I miss my childhood!
Of course I already contain seasons 1 and 2 and it has been fun re-watching my current indicate growing up. My son has also fallen in esteem with the exhibit. He especially loves Rudy while I like the older kids because I was a young teen when this expose started. For later seasons, we rely on the obsolete VHS recordings my dad has kept over the years, but they may not last mighty longer. I’m jubilant that more seasons of this broad prove are being released. Like an earlier viewer stated, this note is so great better than modern T.V. and I’m thrilled that my son can grow up watching them too. He is growing up watching the shows my husband and I enjoyed as kids. Okay, so he’s out of touch with unusual pop culture, but is that such a dreadful thing when he can eye a astronomical role model like Bill Cosby? I highly recommend this indicate.

Of the three newest Walt Disney Treasures DVD packages, this is perhaps the lesser known, but it is by no means the least necessary. It’s what ancient to be known as “rip-roaring” colossal adventure, produced on a rich, large scale unheard-of during the period in which it first appeared.

“Dr. Syn,” which was based on British novels and legends explained on a consuming documentary also included on disc one, is a Robin Hood or Zorro of sorts. But the disagreement is that Dr. Syn is a highly respected minister who completely fools the pompous abominable guys. Yet, in this three-part series, the villains are fleshed out and not caricatured. The dignity and seriousness of the drama holds up beautifully today without the slightest sense of cliché.
In this 2-disc site, you procure all three Incredible WORLD OF COLOR hours with introductions by Walt himself, plus the edited feature-length version released theatrically in Europe in the 60’s and then in the U.S. in the 1970’s. But the aspect ratio of the recent print has been restored for this release so you’ll even notice the television versions in more depth than before, with pleasing restored prints and sound that especially brings out the lush musical accumulate (I wish it was on a separate track!)

And speaking of music, you’ll come by to gape who sings the haunting “Scarecrow” theme–Terry Gilkyson, who also wrote “The Bare Necessities,” along with George Patterson and The Wellingtons. The only detail left out is that The Wellingtons are best known for singing the Gilligan’s Island theme in its first season (there’s more about them in “Mouse Tracks”) .
The other mini-documentary traces Walt Disney’s long and fruitful live-action movie enterprises in the United Kingdom with comments by several of those interested including director Ken Annakin. It’s spacious that the live-action section of Walt Disney’s art is getting recognized and appreciated.
Most of all, if you are a fan of the TV classics The Prisoner or Secret Agent, you have to have this because Patrick McGoohan is in top acquire in this film, even to his remarkably varied speaking assure which transforms his character as considerable as his cloak.
This Disney classic was based on the modern “Doctor Syn: A Legend of the Romney Marsh” written by Russell Thorndike and premiered on the TV Present World of Disney in 1963. This three fraction series was later edited as a movie and released theatrically six years later. Both the fresh three section series as well as the theatrical movie are included here.
Essentially an updated Robin Hood style epic location in the 1700s it’s a stout family movie. While it is a bit dated now compared to other swashbuckling summer blockbusters (after all, it was made for TV originally) it offers a simple upright chronicle and superb acting, especially by Patrick McGoohan, who plays the title role.
I loved this prove as a kid, and it’s well worth revisiting, young and former.

Considering the enigmatic ending of the Oscar-winning “The French Connection,” a sequel seemed obligatory. But four years later, it’s likely that no one was expecting the harrowing twist that came with the follow-up’s station.
This time directed by John Frankenheimer, gruff, foul-mouthed, brute narcotics officer Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle (Gene Hackman) travels to Marseilles, positive to halt the elusive drug kingpin Alain “Frog One” Charnier (Fernando Rey), whom he failed to close in Current York City. Once in France, Popeye is met by Inspector Henri Barthelemi (Bernard Fresson), who resents the former’s vulgar and uncouth crimefighting demeanor. Doyle finds himself as a fish out of water in France, where he is matched with a language he can’t understand, eliminating one of his most useful weapons–his mouth. Definite to come by Frog One on his have (and unaware he is being conventional by Barthelemi to lure Charnier into the inaugurate), Popeye escapes his French escorts. Now here comes the unexpected; in an ironic twist of fate, Doyle is kidnapped by Frog One’s henchmen and forced to occupy heroin in an attempt to capture information from the narcotics agent. Left abused and humiliated by Charnier, Doyle is forced to go through a long, agonizing cold-turkey withdrawal from the heroin forced upon him. Now clear more than ever to conclude his nemesis, we follow Popeye as “French Connection II” unfolds in a satisfying manner, like a crime drama should.
Buy,Download, Or Stream French Connection 2! Click Here
Filmed with a grainy cinematography, matching the mood of the chronicle, this sequel is objective as appealing as the current, while Hackman’s performance–especially during the grizzly-to-view withdrawal sequences–is uncompromising and breathtaking, though no Oscar nomination went his method (though a Golden Globe nod did suffice) . The script allows for surprisingly deep insight to the seeminly two-dimensional character of Popeye Doyle, while Frankenheimer’s directing is tight and effectual. “French Connection II” is objective as colossal as the unique (though not as well-received), if not more entertaining, and in some aspects, grand more harrowing and down-right gritty…a word always associated with the “French Connection” films.
Entertaining, gritty and taking the character of “Popeye” Doyle to fresh lows. Splendid performance by Gene Hackman, it may not have the plain action and the famed roam scene but on its have, “FRENCH CONNECTION II” is a marvelous film and very enchanting.
Four years since the new “THE FRENCH CONNECTION”, in 1975, the sequel would be released. Where the first film was based on genuine events on the lives of Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso, the sequel is more fictional.

This time around, Doyle goes to France to go after Charnier. Being in a modern country, Doyle is a fish out of water and knows that what he was outmoded to Modern York, it’s not going to waft in France, especially with the gendarmes.
But unbeknownst to him, after he’s spotted by Charnier, Doyle is kidnapped and the hard-nosed cop that we saw in the first film will be fighting for his life and be broken down severely.
A riveting film, it may not be at the same caliber as the first but it’s serene a very enchanting film.
If there was one thing that “FRENCH CONNECTION II” was very fortunate to have and that was the return of Gene Hackman reprising his role as Doyle and most importantly having a talented director, John Frankenheimer known for his work in “The Manchurian Candidate” and many other films (a side note: Car gallop scenes have a “FRENCH CONNECTION” tie-in with the producer of that film also producing “BULLIT” and Frankenheimer who worked on “FRENCH CONNECTION II” creating one of more celebrated novel car trudge scenes in his film “RONIN” in 1998) .
VIDEO & AUDIO:
The recount quality for “FRENCH CONNECTION II” is actually lovely kindly. Where “THE FRENCH CONNECTION” focused more on the grittiness of Current York City with its shades of blues and consume of blacks and director William Friedkin making definite that the Blu-ray disc showcases the film as he wanted, “FRENCH CONNECTION II” was filmed in France and featured the beauty of France with top-notch sunlight and vibrant colors during the outdoor scenes. But also managing to choose the gritty and grimy areas of France.
Similar to the first film, there is a valid amount of grain but with the film shot in Marseilles, France and a lot of sunshine and really tantalizing locations in France, considering how conventional this film is, overall it looked pleasing favorable.
As for the audio, the audio is featured in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Similar to the first film, the film is dialogue-driven and also showcases the music of Don Ellis. Dialogue and music is quite definite and the film does feature more gunshots. But overall, the film is mainly dialogue and music driven.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
“FRENCH CONNECTION II” comes with a gracious number of special features.
* A Conversation with Gene Hackman – Gene Hackman expresses his feelings of working on a sequel and also sparkling that perhaps director Frankenheimer may not be so delighted doing a sequel but nevertheless did a proper job but also felt the film was underappreciated because of the success of the first film.
* Commentary by Gene Hackman and Producer Robert Rosen – This commentary features both men (not at the same time) . You mostly hear Robert Rosen talk and his commentary is more on the challenges. Especially working with Frankenheimer who was not so thrilled of working on the sequel and Rosen reveals a lot. From the disaster of getting Mickey Mantle to give permission to utilize the “Mickey Mantle sucks” line to how the scene in France with Doyle running around looking for Charnier. An informative commentary but quite a few wearisome air. Hackman chimes in at definite key parts of the commentary but it seems the two were together but I mediate that Hackman was recorded at a separate time.
* Commentary by Director John Frankenheimer – The novel DVD release was wait on in 2001, Frankenheimer passed away in 2002. So, this commentary is actually quite treasured as its one of the few DVD’s to feature commentary by Frankenheimer. For filmmakers, Frankenheimer’s commentary was technical and thus you learn quite a bit about sure takes. Of course, he credits Gene Hackman making it easy for him. Overall, a well done commentary!
* Frankenheimer: In Focus – This lengthy featurette is actually shapely awesome. A celebration of Frankenheimer’s career as a filmmaker and television director. You net to learn a lot about him through his wife, his daughter and those who have worked with him.
* Isolated Derive Track (DTS MA) – For those who like Don Ellis’s music in the film, you can strictly isolate the catch if needed.
* Enhances for D-Box Motion Control Systems – For those who have D-Box Motion Control capability.
JUDGMENT CALL:
“FRENCH CONNECTION II” was a tough sequel for everyone eager to invent and I can understand why director John Frankenheimer felt “intimidated” of taking on the role as director for the sequel (since he was a great fan of the first film) must have been on taking on the directorial responsibility.
Frankenheimer was a substantial fan of the first and what Friedkin was able to execute, so he tried his best to preserve that in mind but most of all, because of his familiarity with France and the whole film taking plot in France, the them of Doyle as a fish out of the water in a city where he can’t be the plan he wants and live the procedure he wants, definitely made the hard-nosed character vulnerable.
But you have to give a lot of credit to Gene Hackman. In the first film, “Popeye” Doyle was easily injurious but yet you rooted for him as he was going to rob down the criminals his plot and his style. But with this second film, there is a suited amount of time dedicated on the breakdown of Doyle and making him a junkie and then having to go through major withdrawals as they try to invent him well. Hackman did a improbable job!
As for the Blu-ray disc release, it’s grand to have one of the final commentaries of one of the most talented director’s of all time and it was a well-done commentary. The tribute to Frankenheimer with a special featurette on his career was another major plus that I was proud of.
Overall, “FRENCH CONNECTION II” was an toothsome film. Although not following the lives of Egan and Grosso like the first film, I feel that a yarn on Doyle and seeing how he’s broken down by the criminals but then seeing him re-emerge to precise revenge proper relieve at them was sizable.
If there was one thing that I wished was done, that is subtitling on the French. Definite, it’s not really needed but with a profitable expansive of French being spoken, it would have been nice to watch subtitles for that.
But overall, it was an luscious film and a aesthetic wintry Blu-ray disc transfer with a apt amount of special features .
Hopefully we may study the return of “Popeye” Doyle or a passing of a torch for a third film over three decades later.
